Project’s success is credited to Surinder Pal Sharma, NRI who, with support of local leaders has been working for two years to modernize his native village
Taking a significant stride towards enhancing animal welfare and ensuring public safety, the foundation stone for a Veterinary Surgery Centre dedicated to stray dogs was laid in Chuhar Chak, Moga, as part of the “Barking for a Better Punjab” initiative.
The centre will prioritize the compassionate care of stray dogs, providing sterilization and vaccination services, while also working to educate the community on responsible pet ownership. Additionally, plans are in progress to create an adoption centre aimed at rehabilitating and rehoming sick or abandoned animals.
Rising Stray Dog Incidents Highlight Need for Immediate Action
This development follows a rise in reports of stray dog attacks throughout Punjab, including incidents where children were mauled and elderly individuals injured by packs of dogs, raising public concern and highlighting the urgent need for action.
The success of the project is attributed to Surinder Pal Sharma, an NRI who, with the assistance of local leaders, has been working for the past two years to modernize his ancestral village. The initiative has garnered strong support from both NRIs and local residents.
The foundation stone-laying ceremony was led by Dr. JPS Gill, Vice Chancellor of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, and attended by Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University. The event was moderated by Shri Bal Mukund Sharma, Chairman of the Punjab State Food Commission. Senior civil and police officials, including Amardeep Singh Rai (ADGP, Traffic) and Kahan Singh Pannu (former IAS), were also present at the ceremony.
